About the author

People have asked me why I wrote books about pirates. I didn’t mean to: one day I sat down and wrote the scene where Lily is given her beautiful sword, and then I couldn’t stop.

I learned to fence when I was 11 and have always been interested in swords, boats, ships and history. So all of those favourite things have come together in Swashbuckler!

I’m working on several new books right now – and none of them have any pirates in them.

The Swashbuckler books were my first published novels, but I’ve been a writer and editor for many years, mostly working on web sites, newspapers and magazines. My picture book, Billabong Bill’s Bushfire Christmas, was illustrated by Jobi Murphy and published by Random House in 2007. You can go to my website to read more about me and my work, including my next book.

I grew up on the edge of Melbourne, Australia, lived in Sydney for a while, and later on Waiheke Island in the Hauraki Gulf of New Zealand. Now I am back in Melbourne, living in a mudbrick house in the bush by a river, with my partner, a cat called Tom Kitten and two red chooks (Joan and Jackie Collins).

I work part-time for the State Library of Victoria, and on the other days I’m undertaking my PhD in Creative Writing at La Trobe University. I have a degree in Professional Writing and Editing and Master of Arts (Literature).

  1. Hi Clare,
The books aren’t distributed in Canada but they are available online from a number of places, especially Australian booksellers such as The Book Barn and Top Tales. If you Google the titles, you will find a bookseller that ships to Canada (hopefully without paying too much postage!)
    Thanks for your comment.

  2. My daughter would LOVE these books but i can’t find them in Canada. Are they available here?
